It was in 1932 that Harvey Firestone, owner of Firestone Tire, had three Allis-Chalmers tractors built, not for their pulling power, but for speed. They were the first tractors to be fitted with rubber tires.

Firestone hired celebrity race drivers, including Jenkins and Barney Oldfield, one of the most famous of the early auto racers, to engage in tractor races at county fairs and agricultural events.

Famed race car drivers like Frank Brisko, Barney Oldfield, and Ab Jenkins performed in front of an estimated 1 million people during 1933 alone.

There were promotional field demos, pairing a Model U on steel against one on rubber. And to literally drive the point home a fleet of U’s equipped with a high-speed fourth gear raced at tracks across the country.

One of the tractors was on loan to the Ardell Brown Classic Car Center in Salt Lake City in 2004.

Firestone believed the high-speed tractors would be a way he could show farmers that his rubber tires were a technical marvel, not a gimmick.

The agriculture market was skeptical of the new rubber tires. Tractors, at the time, ran on metal rims.

Firestone hired celebrity race drivers, including Jenkins and Barney Oldfield, one of the most famous of the early auto racers, to engage in tractor races at county fairs and agricultural events.

Jenkins eventually took one of the tractors to Bonneville Salt Flats to set a land-speed record. In 1935, he drove the tractor at 68 miles per hour through a one-mile course. He later was given a belt bucket inscribed, "The World's Fastest Farmer."

Eldon Kearl, who facilitated the loan of the tractor, said his research shows the tractor was purchased by a farmer, who found that it had no power but could go fast. It was later purchased by an Ohio man, Randall Sheffied, who planned to use the tractor to plow fields. He, too, found the tractor had no pulling power but went much faster than he wanted. Research told him the tractor was not meant to plow fields but to race.

Plymouth orchard tractor, rare, and exceedingly well photograghed for a tractor.

The only Orchard model of the 214 Plymouth tractors built, it’s literally one of a kind, but that’s not it’s real claim to fame. Instead, that comes from the fact that it was the first tractor to be designed for use with rubber tires instead of the studded steel wheels used before.

Otto Meyer traction engine/locomobile/road trains and the world's largest plow, last built in 1957, last commercial use 1972 (color video).... Was used to plow deep into moor lands and bogs. The extra wide wheels, and cat track, were to keep the farm equipment from sinking in due to the enormous weight of the tractors, and the digging force of the 6 foot deep plow

the weird thing is that the enormous tractors don't haul the plow... they winch it. In the photo above you can see the cable. The tractors were on either side of the field being plowed, and the plow was pulled by the cable from one side to the other. The plow was bladed on either side of the center wheel, and would teeter totter to cut into the turf in one direction at a time

A complete unit consisted of four steam traction engines, (also known as locomobiles) pulling one tipping plow at each one side. There was one big cable reel attached under every locomobile.

The plow was led by the cable and pulled from the left side of two locomobiles towards the right of the other 2 creating a big “X”- shape with the plow in the middle. The lateral distance between the two locomobiles could get quite big and was only limited by the cable length. After every run of the plow, the locomobiles moved forward by the desired furrow width. The cable gear system was developed by Mr Max Eyth.

A direct use of the Locomobile pulling a plough was not possible due to the condition of the ground and the high weight of the tractors

Between 1950 and 1970 the bog areas of the Emsland district were cultivated, they had been determined to be uninhabitable from the 1700s on, but with the invention of the deep plow to get the peat bog from under the sandy topsoil, the next 20 years were undertaken to plow up the North West of Germany, 5 counties, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, from Easter to October.

The Emsland Plan covers the region of the entire North-West Germany and the counties Ostfriesland Leer, Cloppenburg, Bersenbrück and Bentheim

The traction engines (TE's) are positioned on both sides of the field, the TE's are used as a winch to pull the double sided plough two meters deep through the soil. They needed to go that deep to get the deeper peat mixed with the topsoil for better fertilizing.

The TE's were built in 1953 by Wilhelm Otto Meyer. They are two cylinder high pressure engines who have an operating pressure of 20 bar. Each TE has 500Hp. The engines are able to provide the huge amounts of torque needed to get the plough moving.

This is the Emsland Moor Museum in Geeste Germany, opened in July 2010. Coincidentally, the Director General of the German Historical Museum in Berlin, Professor Hans Otto Meyer is the great-grandson of the Otto Meyer that repurposed the 1919 steam engines by doubling their horsepower, and using them to winch the plow across the moors.

there is also a book recently published (I can't find info online) about the moors, the collection "Moor Tide" Publisher Dirk Roese and the Emsland Moor Museum presented in Geeste the book to the public, with over 300 stories, from 54 authors have been recognized in the 370-page book.

Paul Rackham has spent 25 years buying up and restoring more than 230 old and rare agricultural machines, amassing what is thought to be by far the biggest collection in Britain. He went to places not commonly though of as tractor locations, like the athletic cricket field, and found 2.

The collection includes the only surviving example of a Holt 75 - a military tractor bought by the British army from the Americans in World War One to replace horses for pulling hulking Howitzer guns to the frontline.

Stonegate Farm orchard tractor collection, the most rare orchard tractors in America

They now own 140 tractors in all (believed to be the largest private collection of orchard tractors in America). Orchard tractors comprise most of the 74 that are completely restored. “Our goal has always been to own every make and model of orchard tractor made prior to the peak of the 1950s,” Diane says.

By their account, they only need a handful of orchard tractor models to complete their collection – tractors like the Waterloo Boy by John Deere, a rare Huber B and the Moline Jet Star.

While it can be a relatively inexpensive collector hobby to get into, Diane says classic tractors are becoming more popular. “Not only farmers and the children of farmers are collecting anymore,” she adds. “Shows and auctions are beginning to attract big money, white-collar buyers, which – at a recent show in Illinois – resulted in a vintage model Case selling for more than $400,000.”

There were only 100 Moline UDLX tractors ever made, and they have two on display – plus an even more sought-after Moline UTLX Open. There’s a 1946 Hudson pickup, a 1957 Dodge Sweptside D100 and a 1934 Chrysler Airflow.

“We own the only Plymouth orchard tractor in existence and a Sheppard Diesel, one of only 12 ever made,” Diane says.
