In the late 1980’s, Phillips opened his current endeavor, Focus Auto Design, which specializes in molding and forming custom auto parts for restorations and general fixes. Because of the high demand for his services, Phillips quickly earned the money he needed to get back into collecting cars.

Unlike almost every other collection of this nature, these nested boxes of wonder aren’t secreted away from the public and covered up. Instead, every so often Fred throws open his doors and gives a guided tour of his collection. If you happen to be in Calgary at the time, do everything in your power to attend.

You won’t just be getting access to one of the most fantastically varied car collections in the country. You’ll also be getting access to Fred Phillips. Trust me, this is well worth the price of admission – a donation to AARC, the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre.

After working at various Ford dealerships, Scott eventually landed a job with Mickey Thompson from 1967 to 1971 when Mickey was heavily associated with Ford, who funded most of his racing, including his famous record-setting efforts on the Bonneville salt.

Mickey took three Mustangs to set endurance records, with two cars on a 10-mile oval. Scott was there, helping to refuel the cars and keep the smudge pots burning during the night. Later, Mickey returned to the flats with his Ford-powered Autolite Special streamliner urged by a pair of 427 Cammers and Scott’s bright blue paint job.

 That was a time when pallet loads of engines and parts were delivered to Thompson’s southern California shop, dropped out of the sides of DC 3 cargo planes. How good was it back then? A well-funded shop might have a little 1963 Falcon Ranchero to run parts and get lunch. Scott’s parts chaser was a 1969 428 Cobra Jet Torino.

Mickey Thompson only built four pairs of these Ford hemi heads, so the term “rare” doesn’t begin to describe them. Scott says one set ran in Mickey Thompson’s Thunderbolt, with another set as backup, a third set went into a supercharged dragster while the final set sat in the window of M/T’s retail store in Long Beach for sale for $3,200. There were only three cross ram intakes ever built.

Lightweight 63.5 Galaxie that ran a best of 9.26 at 149 mph

the Hemi in this T-bird has a turbocharger and three Carter carburetors. The engine has been relocated six inches to the right to accommodate the set-up. The car has a separate methanol tank and pump system to feed the third carburetor. The Hemi made 804hp normally aspirated and 1,100 on alcohol, and was put together by an engineer who worked at Garret AiResearch turbos

In the photo, it appears Big Daddy in the far lane has a comfortable lead, but Voigt power from the supercharged M/T Pontiac hemi was enough to power past the Swamp Rat for the win. As part of the Top Eliminator prize, Craftsman awarded the winning crew chief the aforementioned tool box that Voigt kept (including its original cardboard container) all these years.

Paul Rackham has spent 25 years buying up and restoring more than 230 old and rare agricultural machines, amassing what is thought to be by far the biggest collection in Britain. He went to places not commonly though of as tractor locations, like the athletic cricket field, and found 2.

The collection includes the only surviving example of a Holt 75 - a military tractor bought by the British army from the Americans in World War One to replace horses for pulling hulking Howitzer guns to the frontline.

Stonegate Farm orchard tractor collection, the most rare orchard tractors in America

They now own 140 tractors in all (believed to be the largest private collection of orchard tractors in America). Orchard tractors comprise most of the 74 that are completely restored. “Our goal has always been to own every make and model of orchard tractor made prior to the peak of the 1950s,” Diane says.

By their account, they only need a handful of orchard tractor models to complete their collection – tractors like the Waterloo Boy by John Deere, a rare Huber B and the Moline Jet Star.

While it can be a relatively inexpensive collector hobby to get into, Diane says classic tractors are becoming more popular. “Not only farmers and the children of farmers are collecting anymore,” she adds. “Shows and auctions are beginning to attract big money, white-collar buyers, which – at a recent show in Illinois – resulted in a vintage model Case selling for more than $400,000.”

There were only 100 Moline UDLX tractors ever made, and they have two on display – plus an even more sought-after Moline UTLX Open. There’s a 1946 Hudson pickup, a 1957 Dodge Sweptside D100 and a 1934 Chrysler Airflow.

“We own the only Plymouth orchard tractor in existence and a Sheppard Diesel, one of only 12 ever made,” Diane says.
