Thief steals rig, owner follows in a pick up truck and eventually - hits the thief with the truck killing him. Case closed.

the thief tried to evade, and got the rig stuck in the median... got out and tried to make a run for freedom. Denied!

I-35 near Fort Worth. 150 years ago they'd kill a horse thief... well, things aren't so different now. A horse would cost about a years wages, or a lot of trouble to break a wild one. Now a vehicle you can earn a living with on the road costs about two years income. Why would the revenge for stealing one be any different? But hey, I'm a simple guy. When the person is caught jumping out of the drivers seat after stealing your rig, that is proof positive you have the right thief, and there isn't much call to tie up the court system and jails with something like this. Maybe I've been watching too  much tv, but, in simpler times in this, and every, country, not much time was wasted on thieves caught dead to rights.

For the first time in over a decade, a steam-powered passenger excursion will depart downtown Chicago Union Station on June 25th and 26th.

Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 will operate The Galesburg Zephyr between Union Station and Galesburg, Illinois for the Galesburg Railroad Days. These all-day, round-trip excursions will feature vintage passenger cars from the 1940s and 50s and include accommodations in standard coach, deluxe coach, and first class and dome car.

No. 765 was originally built in 1944, restored in 1979 and completely rebuilt in 2005 and is maintained by an all-volunteer crew.

The Galesburg Zephyr, a 16 car excursion train, is a nod to the fleets of passenger trains that the Burlington Route operated “EVERYWHERE WEST” starting in the 1930’s. The Burlington Route was an early innovator in diesel locomotives, stainless steel passenger cars and the development of the dome car with superior visibility. This train will carry two vintage dome cars from the 1950’s.

“These trips represent our first partnership with Amtrak and BNSF to bring the magic of the 765 to thousands of people,” said Bill Otter, president of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS). “Passengers aboard this trip will be the first to experience the 765 at high-speed in many years.”

Throughout its history, Galesburg has been heavily linked to the railroad industry. The state's first railroads to connect Quincy and Chicago (the two largest cities at the time) went straight through Galesburg, as did the late 19th century Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.

Though the old stations have been closed down, citizens of Galesburg remain very knowledgeable and proud of their history. The Galesburg Railroad Days is not only our grandest celebration, it's a way to keep alive the stories of our ancestors and those who have laid the tracks for us today. This is our way of continuing to pass down our heritage to our children.

the news from last week that you probably didn't hear about, a drunk driver on June 7th, results in five funerals in Kalamazoo this week.

They are covered in flowers, ornaments, and handwritten notes. Throughout the day, people stop to look at them, to pay respects, and to confirm what happened on this road on Tuesday, June 7 was real.

Five bicycles, painted white.

9 cyclists on an early-evening group ride were struck by the driver of a Chevy Silverado 2500, right near the line where Kalamazoo ends and Cooper Township begins. Nine riders. All nine hit.

Four of the cyclists were injured and hospitalized.

Five were reported dead at the scene.

The southern Michigan bicycle group was planning to make a 28 mile trek from Kalamazoo to Plainwell (note: I lived there from 1975 to 1979) and back, when they were run down by a drunk man in a pickup truck.

3 separate calls had been made to police prior to 630 pm, reporting erratic driving by a pick-up truck of similar description through yards near homes. Many police were dispatched to find the drunk driver before he caused a tragedy, none succeeded.

Those killed and injured were members of the Chain Gang bike club, cyclists who liked to ride on Tuesday afternoons, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow riders, then have refreshments at the end of the ride.

The crash appears to be the worst known in terms of cyclists killed in a traffic collision.

The drunk driver had a previous DUI charge in Tennesee, and here is a photo of him from his facebook page. With a beer, and the truck

Ordinarily I wouldn't post a photo of the drunk... but I changed my mind when I saw this photo he posted Dec 2015

I will also take this moment to showcase the hatred out there for bicyclists, to call attention to the jackasses that feel entitled to the whole road, even when they are sober... here is what Marty Fine had to say on facebook:

Marty Fine As sad and tragic as this was...in turn the penalties for bicyclists not obeying the law should be enforced. Also if bicyclists want to use roads intended for motor vehicles, the should also have a license, registration and proof of insurance, and obey the rules of the road. I pay a lot of money to drive on these roads. Prayers to the victims in this situation.

My reply:
Good idea, take this tragedy, and show how much you hate people on bicycles who ride on roads. No doubt you'll be in the headlines as the next asshole that runs over bikers in a drunk rampage because you've got issues with how much road you feel entitled to. YOU pay a lot of money to drive on roads? Is there a toll for assholes?

And Jeff Witwer left a comment, that you can better understand when you see this photo from his facebook page.

wireless, regenerative, compact and simple way to get up hills when biking, or just lower the effort to bicycle around... the Copenhagen Wheel

of course, it's about a thousand dollars... but, that might not deter you if you're faced with a daily commute to work.

Exactly how much assistance it provides can be predetermined by the rider, using an app on their smartphone. That app also allows them to track their riding stats, including distance traveled, calories burned and elevation gain.

It features either a 250-watt or 350-watt hub motor (buyer's choice), a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a range of approximately 30 miles and a top assisted speed of 20 mph. It weighs 12 lb, and is available in 26-inch, 27-inch and 700C sizes.

meanwhile, in the news... Hulk Hogan's successful multi million dollar lawsuit payoff bankrupted Gawker, who owned Jalopnik... so, Jalopnik is now going to be under new ownership

Jalopnik publisher Gawker Media Group announced it was declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of an effort to deal with a $140 million verdict levied against it in a lawsuit over Hulk Hogan's right to privacy.

Ziff Davis may be interested in purchasing Jalopnik, along with Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Kotaku, Deadspin, Jezebel, and Gawker.

http://www.thedrive.com/news/3927/jalopnik-may-be-sold-as-part-of-gawker-bankruptcy-deal

Ziff Davis, the digital publisher of AskMen, PCMag and Computer Shopper, has placed a bid for Gawker's assets — with $100 million as the opening price — prior to an auction that will be supervised by the bankruptcy court

Patrick George, Ed in Chief at Jalopnik had little to say about the news, http://jalopnik.com/were-here-were-posting-cool-shit-about-cars-get-used-1781768483  other than Jalopnik will soldier on. Oh, and they have 8.7 million readers a month.

Maybe with a new owner Jalopnik will get back on track and drop the non-automotive news. Sure, an airport assault on the sidewalk out front is news, but why the hell is it featured on Jalopnik?

Hell, I guess I'm doing all right then, as I've got about 6.6 million a month between the direct traffic, and the Google Plus traffic to the simulcast content.

Ziff Davis looks like it could use a shot in the arm with interesting sites.

Forget about it, the irresistible force of hope for high speed trains has just hit the immovable object of govt bureaucracy

They finally found out when they tried to get a high speed train from LA to LV, that the govt set up a road block 10 years ago.

The federal govt mandated that they could only go ahead on a high speed train when they bought a high speed train made in the USA.

One problem. No one makes, or has ever made, a high speed train in the USA. It's not likely any company is going to do that any time soon.

news about crazy people threatening their mechanic... so weird!

Aaron Sabbah, 42, of Sydney, Australia, a muscular former personal trainer, had a $170,000 Mercedes-Benz at the mechanics, which he'd previously stolen back after it was repossessed, and it was seized by police while it was being driven by the mechanic.

Judge John North said there was little doubt the mechanic, who had already handed over $4,500 in an attempt to placate Sabbah, thought he was going to be assaulted after getting threats via phone, texts, the instant messaging, and in person, when Sabbah entered the mechanic's workshop with a 16" black dildo in the company of two "stocky" men.

"On the security tape .. the offender can be seen to be carrying a large black dildo in his right hand, which he is swinging as he walks in," Judge John North said during his sentencing at Downing Centre District Court.

The court heard Sabbah had a misguided belief the mechanic owed him money. He previously told court he'd asked the mechanic not to use the car.

The court heard Sabbah had a criminal history dating back to 1991 and had previously spent time in jail.

Seriously amazing how many people are smoking pot and driving, driving without insurance, driving with out paying the car tax (this is in England) driving a car and never getting it registered in England because they came from some other country or work in another country

22 year old Francisco Velasquez stole the new Porsche 918 Spyder out of the dealership showroom, just like in Gone In 60 Seconds, except in late afternoon, from a Salt Lake dealership

Police say Velasquez broke the front glass of the dealership, stealing the key for the sports car and then driving off the property. Police pulled over the suspect near 300 S. State St. about six hours later and arrested him for theft, burglary and theft by receiving stolen property.

It sells for about a million, does the 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, and was recovered without a scratch

used car salesmen... they earned that reputation, and here is an example: The father-and-son team who ran Montecito Motors, a high-end used-car dealership closed in 2010 pleaded no contest to 46 felony charges of conspiracy, grand theft, and tax evasion

The District Attorney’s Office estimates the Taylors stole $1.2 million from 27 of their customers over a period of six or so years.

Chet Taylor, 71, and his son Adam Taylor, 41, were accused of delaying and withholding payments to customers whose cars they sold out of their downtown Santa Barbara lot on consignment, then ducking the customers’ calls and lying to their faces.

They were also charged with forging signatures, filing false tax returns, and misleading creditors. Chet will be sentenced next month to 13 years in state prison. Adam will be sentenced to 11 years.

What a day... a Blue Angel and a Thunderbird - jet jock flying choreography waste of jet fuel and taxpayer dollars - crashed in Colorado and Tennessee

The Thunderbird pilot was part of the demo at the graduation of the current Air Force Academy, around 1pm, after a low pass, he ejected near Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just after ceremonies at the nearby academy where President Obama delivered the commencement address.

The Blue Angel pilot was taking off in #6 from the Symrna Tennessee airport to join the Navy demo group at about 3 pm, did not change direction from the runway according to the map, seems there was a total engine failure

and seems to have stayed with his plane to keep it from hitting homes, and he died on impact, in a forested area next to a housing area.  http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2016/06/02/navy-blue-angel-jet-crashes-smyrna/85308972/

So that's a couple tens of millions of dollars and one dead pilot. Just what the hell do we need flying choreography for at this expense? Doesn't this country need to repair some dams, bridges, and roads?

Nissan is seizing on a more than 40 percent plunge in Mitsubishi Motors’ market value to gain significant control, it just bought 14% more of Mitsubishi, than Mitsubishi owned.... 34%N to 20%M

The purchase makes Nissan the single largest Mitsubishi Motors’ shareholder.

The companies plan to sign an agreement by May 25 in which Nissan can name four directors to Mitsubishi Motors’ board, including the chairman.

The transaction eases concerns about the viability of a Japanese automaker which has dealings with 7,777 companies affecting 410,000 people.

Mitsubishi Motors has manipulated fuel economy data of four minicar models, two of which are supplied to Nissan, and improperly tested other Japan vehicles since 1991.

After overstating the fuel economy of its minicars by as much as 10 percent, Mitsubishi Motors faces the prospect of compensating owners of those vehicles for their shortcomings in performance. It also may have to pay back Japan’s government for tax rebates that its minicars shouldn’t have been eligible for.
